Who would’ve thought that we’d see glasses-free3D on the iPad 2? Well thanks to some researchers at France’s Engineering Human-Computer Interaction Research Group (EHCI), they’ve found a way to recreate the whole glasses-free 3D experience. The researchers developed a hack called the Head-Coupling Perspective which takes advantage of the iPad 2′s camera to track the position and movement of the tablet user’s head and adjusts the image onscreen accordingly. When it comes to speaker docks for iOS devices, apart from a handful of really unique ones, they all pretty much look the same. iLuv’s ArtStation Pro is looking to be one of those really unique ones as its design has made its pairing with the iPad truly something out of the ordinary.

The iLuv ArtStation Pro’s are speaker systems with the iPad’s being placed above the speaker, held in place with a rotating arm that will allow the iPad to be display horizontally or vertically. The combination of the speaker system and the rotating arm makes it look like a desktop computer, with the iPad as its display and it even comes with a matching optional Bluetooth keyboard and remote!

Have you seen kids play with iPads before? They're enchanted by them, mesmerized by the interaction. For some reason, they just speak them. LeapFrog thinks so too, that's why they're making a tablet for kids.

Sure the LeapPad won't be as good as an iPad, but it's only a hundred bucks, clad in tough plastic and will have over a 100 different kinds of game cartridges, books, apps and videos. I'm sure parents would love to get their kids their own tablet so mom and dad can have their iPad back.

Amenbo, 5 Finger Mouse

Double Research & Development Co. has come up with a spanking new input device that it calls “amenbo”, where this unique device is capable of sensing movements and pressure of individual fingers. Complete hand movements can be directly input into the computer, from where it will be utilized in a range of applications that require complete hand recognition. Here’s what the manufacturer has to say about it, “We put a mouse sensor under each fingertip, and can input the coordinates for each finger as well as the downward pressure of each finger. This means that the actual hand motions are being input to the PC. For example, it is possible for the PC to receive the finger data for however many fingers are needed for an action, operating it with one or both hands.”

All fingers are all linked by a flexible printed mesh base which is constructed from stretchable material in order to accommodate a variety of hand sizes. An obvious area where this input device will see action would be to manipulate 3D CAD data, since doing so at the moment requires using a 3D mouse and a regular mouse alongside both hands. Typography Insight Makes Learning Fonts Gorgeous and Easy

Typography Insight, developed by Parsons design student Dong Yoon Park, is sort of like an iPad typeface encyclopedia. Only encyclopedias are boring, and Typography Insight is beautiful and fun. With a wonderful and decently responsive interface, you can beef up on type terminology compare fonts with a nifty overlay mode, or just get all up in their perfect formed faces to appreciate and learn nuances. Park says the type trove will be available in the App Store "soon,"—though no word on whether it'll be a freebie or not. HTC Tablet Stylus Just $80

That HTC is touting the stylus for its Flyer tablet as a wonderful feature is risible on its own—outside of those with very specific uses, nobody should ever need a stylus in 2011. But the price is insane.

The stylus won't be included with the Flyer—instead, it'll be an $80 add-on. Eighty dollars. That's almost a fifth of the cost of the entire tablet. And although the thing does have some multimedia features tucked in, it's still, at its heart, a stick. There's an amusing trend among gadget makers: They keep trying to improve their products by adding a second screen. All too often, this is less like adding a second patty to a hamburger and more like adding a second neck hole to a sweater. It does more harm than good.

The most recent example is Acer Inc. with its $1,200 Iconia laptop. Closed, it looks like a regular laptop. Open it up, and you'll find no keyboard, but two 14-inch, touch-sensitive screens facing each other.

If that sounds weird, well, it's no less weird in use. It's a bit of a mystery why this product ever made it from concept to store shelves, though there are some tantalizing hints.

On a desktop PC, having multiple screens is almost like having one big screen - more meat in the hamburger. But on the Iconia, the second screen replaces the keyboard and touch pad. India is planning to produce a laptop computer for the knockdown price of about $20, they called Sakshat laptop. The project would considerably undercut the XO or “$100 laptop” , that was designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of the US.

XO, which received a cool reception in India, is the centrepiece of the One Laptop Per Child charity initiative launched by Nicholas Negroponte, the computer scientist and former director of MIT’s Media Lab. Intel launched a similar product too, called Classmate.

India’s $20 laptop would also undercut the EeePC, made by Taiwan’s Asustek. The EeePC was the first ultra-cheap (netbook) launched worldwide through commercial channels. It does not have a hard drive and sells for $200-$400.

India’s “Sakshat” laptop is intended to boost distance learning to help India fulfil its overwhelming educational needs. It forms part of a broader plan to improve e-learning at more than 18,000 colleges and 400 universities. However, some analysts are sceptical that a $20 laptop would be commercially sustainable and the project has yet to attract a commercial partner.

The ambitous initiative will be under consideration at a National Mission on Education recently launch in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Pioneered in India by scientists at Indian scientific and technological institutes and a state-owned semi-conductor laboratory.

Sakshat laptop will feature 2GB of memory, WiFi, fixed Ethernet, expandable memory, and consume just 2 watts of power.

R.P. Agrawal, secretary of secondary and higher education, told reporters last week that the cost of the laptop was about $20 a unit, but he expected that to fall. He also said he expected the units to be commercially available in six months. [via FT.com]

Samsung's NC20 Netbook, Successor to the NC10

Samsung's NC10 netbook has barely been out long enough to get a footing in the market, and already we're learning of its natural successor. The NC20 will reportedly hit the ground running in February, and with it will come a 1.3GHz VIA Nano U225 processor, a 12.1-inch display, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g WiFi, Ethernet, a 3-in-1 card reader and a 1.3-megapixel camera. Lenovo IdeaPad S9 Now Available

Lenovo IdeaPad S9 Select online retailers in the United States have started to offer the Lenovo IdeaPad S9, a new 8.9-inch netbook.

Geeks.com and Buy.com sell a 2.4-pound S9 model with the Intel Atom N270 processor at 1.6GHz, GMA 950 graphics, 512MB of DDR2 memory, a 4GB solid state drive, and Linpus Linux Lite operating system. The LED-backlit display has a resolution of 1024Å~600 pixels.

Other features of the IdeaPad S9 include a 0.3-megapixel web camera, stereo speakers, 802.11 b/g Wireless LAN, Bluetooth, Ethernet LAN, two USB ports, an ExpressCard slot, 4-in-1 media card reader, and a VGA output.

There are two extremes in the laptop world: the ultraportable systems that try to keep weight to a minimum and can offer incredible battery life, and the multimedia entertainment or games-focused beasts that act as desktop-replacements. A few days ago we took a look at one of Toshiba's more portable 13.3in notebooks, the Portégé M800. This time around we're bringing you its largest sibling in the form of the Qosmio G50, packing a whopping 18.4in display.

The GX / FX models boast a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo P8600 CPU, NVIDIA's GeForce 9600M GT, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. As for the G50, you'll find most of the same specs, though the inclusion of a SpursEngine graphics system, an extra 250GB hard drive, a digital TV tuner, four USB ports, an eSATA socket, 1.3-megapixel camera, a fingerprint sensor and a dual-layer DVD burner makes it a touch more special. Ericsson and Intel Protect Laptops from Theft

Ericsson collaborating with Intel to ensure that Ericsson's Mobile Broadband Modules are interoperable with Intel® Anti-Theft PC Protection Technology for notebooks to offer a secure and reliable anti-theft solution for mobile broadband users. The collaboration addresses solutions to minimize the negative consequences when notebooks are lost or stolen, and in conjunction independent encryption software when sensitive data is lost while on-the-go and to prevent unwanted data intrusion.

The need for taking the profit out of stealing laptops and protecting sensitive and important information continues to grow with the increased popularity of mobile broadband notebooks. Theft or loss of notebooks can have enormous financial consequences for both consumers and enterprise users, especially when sensitive data on the notebook is lost or obtained by unauthorized persons.

Through this collaboration between Ericsson and Intel, a theft management service residing in the network can send a message via SMS to the mobile broadband module inside the notebook, which securely transfers the message to Intel's Anti-Theft function inside the processor platform, which takes appropriate actions, such as completely locking the computer, making it unusable. When the notebook is located and recovered, an unlock message can be sent to the notebook that makes the data accessible again.

The solution builds on Ericsson's Mobile Broadband Modules, which are tightly integrated in and optimized for notebooks, and Intel's Anti-Theft PC Protection technology, which can lock a stolen or lost notebook. Intel Anti-Theft Technology provides an intelligent mechanism built into the processor platform that detects potential theft situations and responds according to IT policies. Anti-Theft PC Protection technology can be programmed to respond to repeated login failures and expiration of a timer that requires regularly scheduled connection to a central server.

When a loss or theft is detected, Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection technology can lock the laptop, rendering it useless, by blocking the boot process, and when working in conjunction with third-party encryption hardware or software can protect data by deleting cryptographic keys or similar essential code for decryption.

The theft management service can also take advantage of built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) technology in the Ericsson mobile broadband module, which can send location data to a central server. The location function can be utilized to determine a theft situation when the notebook is moved outside a pre-defined area -- a so called geo-fence to locate a lost notebook.

Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules are already optimized with Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology to achieve excellent battery life and will in addition be validated to guarantee the interworking with Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection Technology. The solution will be available in commercial data protection products starting second half of 2009.***

BenQ decided to launch its own Atom-powered netbook this weekend during the IT Month in Taiwan and it's called the Joybook Lite U101. At first glance the Joybook Lite U101 might not seem that different to every other model already out there, but BenQ is the first to offer a 16:9 display on a netbook.
The rest of the specs are fairly standard for netbooks these days, an Atom N270 CPU, Intel 945GSE chipset, 1GB of DDR2 memory (512MB for Linux versions), a range of hard drive options including 80-160GB mechanical drives, as well as 4-16GB SSD options.

Adeona, Free Laptop-Tracking Software

TWO students from University of California and University of Washington, and their professors have developed an open-source system for tracking the location of a lost or stolen laptop that does not rely on a proprietary, central tracking service. The open-source developers of Adeona are Ph.D. students Gabriel Maganis and Thomas Ristenpart, and professors Tadayoshi Kohno and Arvind Krishnamurthy. They cite two major differences between Adeona and a commercial product.

Adeona can be downloaded free of charge. Adeona's developers say it preserves privacy, because no one besides the owner (or an agent of the owner's choosing) can use Adeona to track a laptop.

"Unfortunately, with current proprietary tracking systems, users sacrifice location privacy," say the software's creators. "Indeed, even while the device is still in the rightful owner's possession, the tracking system is keeping tabs on the locations it (and its owner) visits. Even worse, with some commercial products, even outsiders (parties not affiliated with the tracking provider) can ‘piggy-back' on the tracking system's internet traffic to uncover a user's private information and locations visited."

Adeona is designed to use the open-source OpenDHT distributed storage service to store location updates sent by a small software client installed on an owner's laptop. The client software continually monitors the current location of the laptop, gathering information (such as IP addresses and local network topology) that can be used to identify its current location. The client then uses strong cryptographic mechanisms not only to encrypt the location data, but also to ensure that the ciphertexts stored within OpenDHT are anonymous and unlinkable..

A laptop, also called a notebook, is a small mobile computer. Depending on the size, material used for manufacturing it and other factors, its weight ranges from 1 to 8 kilograms (i.e. 2 to 18 pounds).

The source of power is usually a single main battery, or an external AC/DC adapter is used. Apart from supplying power to the laptop, it also charges the battery. To avoid havoc in case of power failure, a 3 Volt cell is provided to run the clock and other vital system processes.

Though laptops are equally capable and powerful as desktop computers, they are much more expensive than similar capability and configuration desktop computer. Size is the unique property of a laptop. The components used in both, laptops and desktops are the same in terms of the functions they perform, but the components in laptops are miniaturized and made to support efficient power consumption.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is usually the technology used for the display screen. They have a built-in keyboard and a touchpad as input devices. Provision is also made for connection of external mouse, and even keyboard.

Apart from the advantages like compactness and mobility, a set of disadvantages has also been associated with laptops.

A huge amount of discrepancy is observed when it comes to standardization issues of laptops. There exist worldwide standards for form factors of the peripherals and add-in PC cards used in a desktop computer. But no such standards are as yet enforced for form factors of laptop internals. Electric voltage, motherboard layouts, internal adapters used in connecting the hard disk, optical drive, LCD cable, keyboard and floppy drive to the main board, all still face issues with standardization. These hits hard on the poor user who is uneducated in this relevant field. Apart from them, a bit of difficulty may also be faced by the repair technicians. Familiarization of different parts and hardware that perform the same function is important.

As an outcome of the improper, or all most no standardization, the laptops suffer compatibility problems too. Most of the times, it is not possible to use one manufacturer`s components in the laptop produced by another manufacturer. The reasons behind this can be assurance of product stability, prolong product lifetime, and to avoid dubious warranty issues. Some manufacturers provide the laptops with a set of ports to let the user connect the hardware that he wants to use.

Upgradation of a laptop is another issue. Due to both technical and economic reasons, it is limited. Due to the proprietary designs of the laptops by each manufacture, it is difficult to upgrade them and most of the times even repairing is a costly affair. The standard peripherals, like audio, video, USB, 1394, Wi Fi, Bluetooth, are integrated in the motherboard. Upgrading these thus requires either of external ports, card slots or wireless peripherals. As far as the memory units and batteries are concerned, they can generally be upgraded according to the user`s needs.

Performance is another issue. RAM is shared between program memory and graphic adapters in laptops. Because of which performance of the laptop is affected. The major concern of the designer is compactness and energy efficiency against high performance. Generally, for the home requirement, laptops prove out to be good options for fast achievement of required performance. With new technology like dual core processors and perpendicular recording, laptops` performance is already showing a progressive graph when compared to the desktops.

Laptops can also pose health hazards. Temperature generated by laptop can affect sterility in men. Also, laptop keyboard can lead to RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury). Thus it is advised to place the laptop on a table or desk when working.
